by Michael Bond, illustrated by R.W. Alley
Ages 4-8 32 pages Harpercollins June 2007 Hardcover

Many of us know about Paddington the Bear, but I would surmise many of us are either unaware (or do not remember) how he first made his ways into our lives. Paddington explains the lovable character’s origin as a stowaway on a ship. It’s a perfect time to read this book since Paddington is starring in his very own upcoming movie.

Those familiar with the character will recall that, at the frenetic Paddington Station stop in London, the Brown family discover the sweet but overwhelmed bear and decide to welcome him into their home after treating him to a much-needed meal. That is the start of their long-term ongoing relationship with the bear, who came to them carrying only a few jars of marmalade and with the infamous tag, “Please look after this bear.”

Paddington shares a number of experiences with his new family, from riding home in a taxi to meeting Mrs. Bird and taking a soapy bath. Paddington starts to share the details of how he came to be a stowaway, but it comes as no surprise that he falls fast asleep before providing many of them. Of course, avid Paddington fans know that those details are generously shared in the many books that follow this one.

This simple text and beautiful illustrations make Paddington an ideal tool to introduce young readers to this treasured character, and the classic nature of this particular book in the series will make it a welcome addition to any child’s book collection.
