Painting with Picasso by Julie Merberg and Suzanne Bober is charming little board book attempting to introduce little ones to the work of the great master Picasso. This thick and sturdy board book (designed to survive numerous trips and falls) is aimed at children who are just learning to read. Board books made of pressed cardboard, a white laminated surface, and white fibers all the way through are the rage in children’s book publishing for the littlest book lovers.
Painting with Picasso begins with a short but elegant description of what an artist does and also a definition of art. It then goes on to familiarize tots with the more famous of Picasso’s paintings, like The Acrobat, Child with a Dove, Girl on Ball, and Mother and Son. The book finishes off with a tribute to Picasso, giving impressionable little ones a glimpse of his physical persona by reproducing Picasso’s self-portrait. Each painting is reproduced with meticulous care and supported by apt rhyming descriptions aiding learning by repetition and association. All in all, a good introductory book for little ones to get their feet wet. Should you get this book for a little one in your family? Depends on how much you like Picasso!
