A shiny new board book with its chunky pages has an inherent appeal, and the addition of folding flapped pages adds to it. However, that initial positive reaction wears off quickly with Kate Spohn’s Pajama Mamas . Pajamas and mothers are ideal topics for a board book, but the stringing together of words with no clear direction prevents the book from reaching any of its potential.
Uncomplicated text can be endearing, but lines such as “bliss bliss baby,” “happy hug Mama,” and “Moonbeam Mama” do not elicit such emotions. There is simply no clear connection between one line of text and the next, and the illustrations do little to make up for this shortcoming.
There are countless sweet board books deserving of the attention (and purchasing power) of new parents, but Pajama Mamas is one that can be guiltlessly overlooked.
