Paleo Bugs is the kind of book that can make a bug and fossil fan out of anyone! Author-illustrator Timothy Bradley has written a worthy follow-up to his excellent Paleo Sharks (2007).
Part biology-manual, part creepy guide to the ghoulish, Paleo Bugs covers the range of odd and fascinating prehistoric bugs ranging from seven-foot long millipedes to 390 million-year-old cockroaches.
The drawings are engaging and meticulously done. Scale drawings that compare each critter to the size of a child, for example, are a great touch. This book packs a lot of technical information - pronunciation keys to the names of organisms and information about the natural habitat, classification and morphology of various bugs. The sections describing how organisms are fossilized, insets showing the geological timescale and a solid bibliography all add greatly to the content.
The uniqueness of this book lies in presenting so much technical information and high-quality science in fun, engaging ways - this is not a dry, dull book by any stretch of the imagination. Highly recommended!
