Peek-a-Zoo!
by Nina Laden
Grades PreK+ 22 pages Chronicle March 2014 Board book

Laden’s follow-up to Peek-a-Who? has children guessing who’s at the zoo.

Peeking out of die-cut holes are a tiger, a kangaroo, a cockatoo, and a panda bear. On the last page, children can peer into a mirror and see their own reflection. Underneath their image is a sign: please feed the animal!

The words “peek a” always proceed the text shown under the die-cut hole. Sometimes the animal is identified (kangaroo, cockatoo) or the word is associated with the sound the animal makes (mew) or with what the animal is eating in the picture (bamboo).

The gouache illustrations, which are rich in color, are speckled with black and green marks. The sturdy board book pages will help extend the life of this book.
