The cover hints at what’s inside: animals playing peekaboo. But I wasn’t expecting to be amazed when I opened the cover.
In the book are seven cute animals, facing us, and their paws are the flaps covering their smiling faces. There are no words on the tan backgrounds or under the two flaps. But if I was reading this to a child I would name the animal, do a funny sound effect, and then say “peekaboo” as one of us opened the paws.
The paws have short, rounded claws, and they open like the pages of a book or the shutters on a window.
The animals are young and realistic-looking. The fur looks flyaway because it’s so soft and fine. I like that you can see the animals’ tails and the pads on the underside of their paws. The animals are a mix of common farm animals, pet animals, and forest animals.
The last page of the book has a flat “mirror” covered by two pale human hands. The only words that appear in the book can be seen here: “Peekaboo! Is it YOU?” The flaps are sturdy and because they open with little effort, they are less apt to rip.
Toddlers and preschoolers could enjoy this book, too, by contributing the animal noises or by saying what they know about each animal. I will be book-talking this book at Baby Rhyme Time and Preschool Storytime.
