The Penultimate Peril (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 12)
by Lemony Snicket, illustrated by Brett Helquist
Ages 9-12 368 pages HarperCollins October 2005 Hardcover

The ever-evasive Lemony Snicket returns again to share the continuing saga of the Baudelaire children. Orphaned when their parents perished in a house fire, Sunny the baby, Klaus the reader, and Violet, the oldest and the inventor, continue to find their way in the world. They’ve often been helped by relatives and good friends but have most often been deceived by others who would like to own their family fortune.

When we find the children in The Penultimate Peril, this twelfth volume of their story, they are returning to the city that was once their home. Riding in the back of a taxi driven by Kit Snicket, they are unsure whether to be excited or afraid. They know nothing of this woman except her name. They’ve discovered a secret organization called VFD in previous adventures, and they will soon be embroiled in the midst of this organization.

When Kit delivers them to the Hotel Denouement, the children will have to use all of their detective skills to determine whom to trust and to prevent themselves from being captured. When they discover that Count Olaf, their maniacal uncle, is also staying at the hotel, they are sure that danger is imminent.

Author Snicket has delighted his audience with these three children and their adventures for many years. The reading knowledge held by Kraus, the tenacity of Sunny, and the creativity of Violet are skills that serve them well. Readers are always anxious to see what the children will be able to do next. This title is a must for all Snicket fans and will make a great gift to read aloud with younger children.
