Alex Fuentes and Brittany Ellis are quintessential high school opposites. He is the Latino gang member from the wrong side of town, and she is the blonde captain of the Pom Squad from the upper-class echelons. Of course, the two don’t mix - at least not until they are forced together as lab partners in Mrs. Peterson’s chemistry class. Neither is happy with the arrangement, but as Brittany struggles to keep her perfect world in order and Alex tries to maintain his tough-guy status while dreaming for a better future, they realize they’re not so different after all.
Perfect Chemistry is definitely a classic “Romeo and Juliet” theme, but it is anything but typical. Reading this first-person narrative from both Alex and Brittany’s alternating points of view, it is difficult not to be drawn in. Author Simone Elkeles has become known for her realistic teen dialog, her latest creation does not disappoint. Although the outcome is probably predictable, one can’t help but cheer this couple on as society and racial issues block their way.
Perfect Chemistry is a gripping mix with the drama of West Side Story meeting the addictiveness of Twilight for a forbidden love story you just can’t put down. The chemistry between the main characters tugs at the reader’s heart, coming together in an explosive nuclear reaction all its own.
