Santa (who is a cat) cannot deliver Christmas presents because he’s sick in bed with a fever. “Will Christmas be canceled? Will it come to that?” “Never!” cried Santa. “Let’s call Pete the Cat!” Pete cuts his surfing holiday in Key West short so he can help Santa. “I’ll do it!” said Pete. “And although I am small, at Christmas we give, so I’ll give it my all.” Pete has a can-do attitude. He dons a red Santa suit, and the elves (also cats) help Pete fill his red minibus with presents.
Eight reindeer fly Pete and his minibus rooftop to rooftop. He slides down chimneys like Santa and crosses off names from a long list when the presents have been delivered. When Pete arrives back at the North Pole, everyone celebrates his success with heartfelt thank-yous and a gift.
Librarians and caregivers can go online and listen to the song that is incorporated into Pete’s dialogue. “Give it your all, give it your all. At Christmas we give, so give it your all.” Pete’s easygoing personality and words of wisdom are something both children and adults can emulate at any time of the year. His stories are appealing because of the bright, large illustrations, and the expressive writing (“This is totally groovy”). Dean, who found Pete at an animal shelter, and Litwin, who is inspired by folk music, have created a character that is hard to forget.
