Walt Disney's Peter Pan (Little Golden Books)
by Random House Disney, illustrated by Al Dempster
Ages 4-8 24 pages RH Disney January 2007 Hardcover

This book is the Little Golden Book version of Walt Disney's Peter Pan. Just as Walt Disney’s animated film version of J.M. Barrie's classic begins with the riotous and entertaining Darling family-pretend adventures, so does this book.

We embark on the dreamlike adventures of Wendy, Michael, and John as they follow Peter Pan and Tinker Bell into the magical world of Never Land. Just about every child’s excitable, adventurous heart begins to beat frantically with pure envious delight at the amazing sights and breathtaking feats the young Darlings face with Peter Pan as their guide.

Mermaids, pirates, fairies, Indians, crocodiles, and the evil Captain Hook await the newly welcomed Wendy and her brothers. The Lost Boys are a great group, but only Peter keeps Never Land spinning on its axis. When offered the chance to return home to London and their family, the Darling children realize that home is where the heart is, and that is with their parents. If Captain Hook’s devious plan to interfere is not thwarted, though, they may never get to see home again.

Considering this is a book form of the animated film, the storyline is remarkably similar, obviously meant to retell the film’s story and doing so efficiently. The illustrations are all exact duplicates of scenes from the animated film, which reinforces the clone-like qualities displayed between the two different visual formats of Walt Disney’s Peter Pan. Peter Pan will always be a classic, though this particular book doesn’t really do the story justice.
