Author Pascale Estellon takes the traditional notion of an activity book to another level by transferring her vivid imagination onto the pages of Photo Finish .
The visually appealing book, with its glossy finish and crisp photographs, includes ordinary items (such as faces) missing some of their parts, as well as opportunities for individuals to draw things from scratch (such as filling a blue sky with whatever they wish).
There is a princess crown missing the face of its wearer, a charming photograph of a dog with a stenciled bowl that needs to be filled with food and water, and a number of vases missing their flowers. There are also photographs of some fish looking for their voices (with words to be added in the balloons above their mouths) and a sock that is yearning to be a rooster but is in need of the help of a budding artist.
As an activity book, Photo Finish has the potential to provide its users with hours of entertainment as they complete the unfinished illustrations. The only issue is that the book is so beautiful and well put together, some precocious readers might actually need extra assurances that it really is acceptable for them to draw on the designs, even though many are arguably stand-alone works of art that should not be altered.
