Piano Starts Here: The Young Art Tatum by Robert Andrew Parker is a wonderful biographical account of the great jazz pianist Art Tatum. Despite being born nearly blind, with the encouragement of his parents he began playing the piano as soon as his little body would allow him. As he grew up, he gained experience performing live through his church and local establishments. Eventually his name recognition grew to reach international audiences and he traveled all over the world. Art Tatum has been written about in at least eight well-known music books that focus on the world of jazz.
This hardcover book is also protected with a slipcover jacket that will prevent wear and tear and ensure a long life for the book. Parker also created the watercolor illustrations; he has illustrated many highly acclaimed children’s books in the past is himself a jazz musician.
I highly recommend this exceptional children’s book. It may very well inspire children with disabilities and also raise awareness of the roots of jazz music.
