Kind-hearted Mouse is on his way to Little Bird’s house with a homemade acorn birthday cake. Before he gets there, though, he is stopped four times by his hungry, cake-loving friends.
Because objects are exchanged for pieces of cake, Mouse arrives at Little Bird’s house empty-handed. “I’m so sorry,” he says. Little Bird knows what to do with her birthday net, flyswatter, cork and a wire, though. They go back outside and exchange the objects for cake ingredients.
The ink and digital illustrations contain dialogue that will be humorous when read aloud (“Yup, a flyswatter! Nothing more useful than a flyswatter”/ “Wowsers, that’s one tasty-looking cake!”). Children will be surprised to discover what each animal gives and receives on Mouse’s journey. These pages of give-and-takes could easily turn into a guessing game.
This book has well-thought out characters with a lot of personality, and it’s full of surprises. Eating and baking cake has never looked so rewarding. No recipes included.
