Being a Pig Is Nice: A Child's-Eye View of Manners
by Sally Lloyd-Jones, illustrated by Dan Krall
Ages 4-8 40 pages Schwartz & Wade May 2009 Hardcover

A young girl, tired of being nagged to mind her manners, imagines how wonderful life would be if she were a pig instead of a child.

A pig has to be filthy and yucky all the time, since it would be very rude for a pig to be clean. But she doesn’t really want to be a smelly, dirty pig.

What if she were a snail instead? Snails are never asked to hurry up and walk fast…in fact, snails must dawdle and trail behind or else they get in trouble. This sounds perfect, except that unfortunately snails are also very slimy.

And so it goes, as the little girl imagines herself as a member of a herd of elephants, a troop of monkeys, or even as a little owlet, none of which have to deal with the same rules of polite behavior that she does.

This is an amusing look at the manners (or lack thereof) of the animal world, as seen through the longing eyes of a young child. The illustrations of the bright-eyed, pony-tailed little girl are adorable, and that of the various animals making huge messes are quite entertaining. This book is sure to induce a fit of giggles.
