Pirates in Paradise is one of four books in a series of fluent readers travel adventure books by Connie Lee Berry, backed up by a large, interactive website (www.ijbooks.com) where readers can join in activities, contests and a club.
Geared for children aged between seven and nine, Pirates in Paradise is filled with just the right elements - everything from nightmares and childhood concerns to swashbuckling pirates and a heartwarming rescue. A family decides to vacation in the Carribean when they are surprised by a pirate attack. The pirates steal the ship and take the two boys as workers only to find that these are not simpering children but courageous young men who can outthink the pirates.
The imagery in the book and on the cover are very homey – they look like regular photos of family vacations that have been slightly enhanced with a program like Photoshop. I could find no information regarding the many eco-printing options available to publishers today, such as using vegetable inks, recycled content or carbon off-settings. However, the price of the book itself offsets these concerns – at only 3.95$ (US), Pirates in Paradise is certainly a bargain.
