Playful Little Penguins
by Tony Mitton, illustrated by Guy Parker-Rees
Ages 4-8 32 pages Walker Books October 2007 Hardcover

Full of rich, vibrant color, the cover art on the children’s big picture book Playful Little Penguins seems to promise a story filled with excitement and happiness. Creative author Tony Mitton and illustrator Guy Parker-Rees really deliver on that promise.

Beginning and ending with smiles, this is the story of a happy group of penguin pals. As with any child’s normal day, these little ones experience ups and downs, and show us their compassionate problem-solving skills. We’re invited to join the active playtime, split into several grand little adventures of the penguin babes. From sledding to swimming to leaping and jumping around their wintry homeland, with a lunch of fish and a dance with a new friend, their day together is told through lively rhymes.
“The penguins do a silly dance- how they jump and wiggle! Now the little seal pup begins to grin and giggle.”
Woven into the cute tale are simple, good-sense family and community values that parents will appreciate. The day ends with the families gathering their young ones for snuggling, as it is time for bed.

The bright, cheerful and cartoony artwork is appealing and engaging. There isn’t a color “theme”, but instead a complete use of all colors and shades and the moods that they can offer. The small details on each page encourage discussion as the book is shared. Even the text of the rhyming swoops and swirls, drawing in little fingers to trace and dance along across the page.

Playful Little Penguins is meant for very young children, but the older ones - and adult kids - in this household have all enjoyed it many times over. It is the perfect addition to any young library, and an ideal bedtime story.
