Filmmaker Spike Lee and his wife, Tonya, pretty much repeat the success of their first picture book, Please, Baby, Please, with a delightful look at what happens when a new puppy invades the world of two little siblings. The result is a fun and rhythmic romp that proves getting a new dog is just like having another baby around the house
This puppy gets into all kinds of trouble despite the constant pleas of a little boy and his older sister, who wonder if their newest family member will ever settle down. Over and over again they beg, “Please, puppy, please,” as the rascal breaks all the rules, rolling in mud, disrupting bath time, running off and basically driving everyone crazy.
What make this book shine are the illustrations, rich with color and depth and appeal. Kadir Nelson is a Coretta Scott King Award winner for his work on other books, such as ellington was not a street and Thunder Rose and, in this book, his characters shine from the page with warmth and whimsy.
Please, Puppy, Please is an adorable picture book for young children, especially those who have just discovered that getting a new puppy is a lot like getting a new little brother or sister – plenty of work, but well worth the effort in the end.
