Polar Bear has misplaced his underwear.
His friend Mouse, who wears orange underwear, asks him, “Is this your pair, Polar Bear?” whenever they see a pair. But the colorful striped ones belong to the zebra, the flowery tiny ones belong to a butterfly, and the frilly polka-dotted ones belong to a squid.
The six pairs of underwear featured in the book are visible through a die-cut underwear-shaped hole. Children can guess which animal they believe owns the underwear. Animals are shown wearing them when the page is turned.
Polar Bear and Mouse do find Polar Bear's underwear by the end of the book, and once children discover where they were all along, they will want to flip back to the beginning of the book to look again! On the last page, Polar Bear sings a silly rhyming song about his favourite pair of underwear.
While reading this book aloud, be sure to exaggerate the sounds and voices and actions each animal makes. For example, the pig says nom, nom, nom as he eats a doughnut, and the squid wiggle, wiggles his arms. The thick pages, which are long and vertical, are the color of brown paper bags. The background contains minimal detail.
This picture book was originally published as Shirokuma no pants in Japan in 2012 by the author and illustrator, who also created the doodle and sticker book Make Faces.
