Catherine Corey Keegan Dana, aka Keeker, is growing up. Living on a farm in Vermont with her “sneaky” pony, Plum, at ten years old, Keeker is looking forward to a summer with her friend Polly and Polly’s pony, Taffy, riding, building forts, swimming in the lake and generally lazing through the long summer days. But Keeker’s plans are upset by Polly’s planned trip to France with her parents.
Before Keeker can even think about getting lonely, her mother plans a surprise: Keeker and Plum will be going to sleepaway pony camp, Camp Kickapoo. Keeker thinks this idea is great, assigned to a cabin with two other girls her own age, one of them, Tifni, a former riding competitor. The girls are a little bit homesick (easily cured when Tifni shares a huge candy stash) but disappointed that they will not be allowed to attempt the more complicated jumps with the older girls. But since this is a story about Keeker, she and her roommates are soon in the middle of a grand adventure, capturing the attention of the whole camp.
Expanding her horizons from the family farm (and Plum’s obsession with an apple tree), Keeker steps into this latest phase of her life with her usual curiosity, enthusiasm and penchant for mischief, a young girl ready to take on the world, Plum her faithful companion.
