A Poor Excuse for a Dragon is the adorable story of Fred, a dragon who leaves home to fulfill his duties as a good dragon. To help him on his way, he follows the list that his parents have given to him, which details how to be a good dragon. The list includes five items: - Run amok,
- Eat people,
- Roar,
- Breathe fire, and
- Act scary.
It sounds simple. Fred does his best to accomplish everything on his list, but he runs into problems along the way. Luckily, he meets characters who help him find something that makes him a good dragon, even though that something isn’t on the list.
This fairy tale about a dragon features your typical fairy-tale characters, including a dragon, a Princess, an ogre, and a witch, but these characters are refreshingly outside of their classic roles. They all have their own very strong personalities, which are effectively portrayed through their speech.
Author Geoffrey Hayes also illustrates this book with simple drawings that are sure to keep children visually entertained as they read about Fred’s adventures. This Level 4 Step into Reading book is designed for newly independent readers who can read simple sentences and are ready for some challenging vocabulary. Five stars.
