No world could be more wonderful than that in which a prim and proper cat is best friends with a slovenly but big-hearted pig. Opposites do attract—so the universal “they” say—and Porky and Bess are about as opposite as can be. Surprisingly, a splendid camaraderie can be found between the two personality extremes.
Porky has several tasks on his plate, and the days until they're due are numbered. He has a poem to write for a special presentation, a well-loved family recipe to make, and a trip to the pond to take. It is quickly plain, however, that none of this is possible without the help of his great friend Bess.
Bess is perfection in every possible way—the absolute “Mary Poppins” of cats. As a mother of small kittens, Bess requires many traits like cleverness, cleanliness, and patience. Her nurturing ways and motherly traits are often a great help to Porky when he is stumped with a problem…or just being Porky. After all, not just any cat has the ingenuity to come up with a box of nighttime to replace missing moonlight to complete a favorite family recipe!
Porky and Bess is a delightful developing reader book with five short chapters. Beyond the typical elementary vocabulary and simple sentence structure found at this level of reading, authors Weiss and Friedman bring a light, genuinely jovial nature to the storyline in conjunction with Winborn’s fabulously expressive illustrations. Giggles and laughs guaranteed!
