Ages 4-8 32 pages North-South Books April 1995 Hardcover

Dorothee Duntze has created a simplified and delectably illustrated edition of the classic fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. The simplicity allows children of all ages to grasp and enjoy the story not only through words but through the art as well.

In this classic tale, a young woman shows up at a castle on a dark and dreary night. She is tired, she is wet, and she claims to be a real princess. But with so many imposters trying to fool the handsome prince, it is up to the Queen to determine the validity of this lovely lady’s claims. By hiding a pea under an absurd number of mattresses and quilts, the truth will be found out. Are the mystery girl’s claims of royalty real or not?

The Princess and the Pea is rich with wonderful and creative illustrations. The story is clearly told in the details and depictions of the characters’ actions with every illustration. Duntze’s edition of the Hans Christian Andersen tale is a classic.
