100 Promises to My Baby by Mallika Chopra
272 pages Rodale Books April 2005 Hardcover rated 4 1/2 out of 5 stars

Mallika Chopra, daughter of Deepak Chopra, has written a beautiful and inspiring collection of essays, poems and stories that reflect a deep respect, love and understanding of children. This lovely book is both a guide for new parents, and a tribute to children, offered in the form of one hundred promises the author found herself making to her own child, as well as to the children of the world.

Love, security, a strong foundation – all are promises Chopra hopes to keep for the children in her life, along with a sense of feeling cherished and cared for in a world that often regards children as objects of ownership rather than the wonderful beings they are. The book offers these one hundred promises relating to Connections, Hopes, Traditions, Choices, Values, Lessons, Love, Purpose, Miracles and Spirit. Each chapter begins with a promise and ends with a reflection that allows the reader to put into practice the wonderful ideas being discussed in the lushly written essays, poems and insights.

Chopra uses words like a soothing balm, creating a deeply inspiring book that would be a perfect gift for new parents, or even grandparents. The author’s goal of establishing the intention of the promises comes shining through as each commitment is made; from showing a child how to make the world a better place, to teaching values that come from the heart, to reaching for balance in life, to helping the child see the hidden meaning behind events.

This book is as much a spiritual guide to discovery as it is a unique and empowering parenting book. For both parent and child, the power of these promises lies not just in seeing them fulfilled, but in the journey towards fulfillment itself, where parent and child get to work together to make the child’s life a time of growth, magic, wonder, awe and possibility.

Mallika Chopra wrote this book as she eagerly awaited the birth of her first child, but her gift is a precious one that can be cherished by anyone who is entrusted with the care of a child. And when you think about it, aren’t we all, in one way or another?
