Girls of Grace Q&A and Girls of Grace Make It Real
by Point of Grace
Grades 9-12 128 pages Howard Books August 2005 Paperback

Point of Grace is a Grammy-nominated Christian pop group of four young women who are passionate about teenage girls. They conduct two-day seminars all around the country for these girls, and have written these books as a result of many, many conversations with teenage girls.

Make It Real is a devotional and Bible study workbook that takes the girls through real life issues. Each member of Point of Grace addresses a specific topic, such as gossip, boundaries or self image. They present some instruction and devotional material, which is followed by a Bible study guide that lets the girls explore on their own.

Part of what will draw girls to this book is that each singer—Heather, Leigh, Denise and Shelley—is real and honest about herself and the issue she is talking about. She also has a “Q and A” page, where she reveals personal information about herself. The singers come across as friends who truly care about the girls as individuals.

Q & A With Point of Grace is a compilation of questions that real teenagers ask Point of Grace at their concerts and workshops. These are hard questions that come from the real life experiences of today’s young people. Questions like, “Is oral sex okay?”, “Two of my girlfriends are having sex. Is that okay?” and “What do I do if my friend is thinking of suicide?”

It would be tempting to stick a warning label on these books because they are so honest and address such “adult” subjects. These are, however, the issues that confront middle and high school aged girls in today’s world. Kudos to Point of Grace for not backing down from reality and for being honest with teens.

Teenage girls will find both of these books helpful. Parents will find them eye-opening. They are honest, helpful guides for teenage girls—Christian or not—who are faced with the many choices, pressures and dilemmas in their lives.
