The Queen of France (Junior Library Guild Selection)
by Tim Wadham, illustrated by Kady MacDonald Denton
Ages 4-8 32 pages Candlewick March 2011 Hardcover

If your child loves playing make-believe and likes to pretend to be someone else, she will enjoy this picture book. Follow along as a little girl named Rose slips on her necklaces, bracelets, crown and other clothing to become The Queen of France.

Once transformed into royalty, Rose visits her “subjects” - but her mother is busy in the garden planting flowers, and her father is mowing the grass. Not overly anxious to play the Queen of France game, both parents refer to their daughter as “Rose” when talking to Her Majesty.

When the “Queen” asks if Rose’s mother has seen her daughter, she replies, “No. I hope she remembers to clean her room.” When the royal personage pricks her finger on a rose bush, she seeks out the Royal Physician (her dad) to fix it. “Are you by chance the Royal Physician?” she asks. “No, I am Rose’s father,” is his reply. “I hope that you find the Royal Physician.”

With the game growing a little stale, Rose decides she’ll have to switch back to her former self and tend to her finger. She gives it one more try before deciding she’d rather be Rose than the Queen of France.

A cute story with charming illustrations, this picture book is not only amusing but also embedded with a message: Perhaps it is better to be yourself rather than somebody else. On the other hand, it is fun to also occasionally play “pretend,” too!
