Rainbow Fish and the Whale is a Tuff Book adaption of the picture book Rainbow Fish and the Big Blue Whale (North-South Books, 1998).
Rainbow Fish and his friends are known for their glittery scales. In this book, they encounter an old whale. He is gentle, but they conclude that he is a threat. They have watched him consume vast quantities of their food supply, and they have seen him swish his tail in anger.
When the fish retreat to a cave for safety reasons, they become alarmed when they discover the whale has followed them. Hunger causes Rainbow Fish to confront the whale; when he does, he realizes that their fears were based on a misunderstanding. After apologies (and laughs) are exchanged, new friendships ensue. Together, the fish and the whale look for a new home with a better food supply.
Marcus Pfister’s illustrations contain sparkly fish and colorful underwater scenery. The size of this whale, in comparison to the fish, is captured best when he is eating krill and when he comes face to face with Rainbow Fish.
Parents looking for sturdy books for toddlers will appreciate this book. The laminated pages in Tuff Books help extend the life of a child’s favorite book.
