Disney is known for creating fun-loving and addictive characters, and its introduction of Remy, a wide-eyed rat who helps a novice chef whip up an entire selection of culinary treats, is a great continuation of this tradition. Young readers can get a small glimpse into Ratatouille’s life through this sweet and simple set of four board books, packaged in a carrying case for kids on the go.
The first book introduces readers to Remy, the friendly rat who enjoys cooking and uses his skills to make Linguini, a human chef, shine. The second book about Linguini explains how the two met and decided to partner to create masterpieces in the kitchen. From there, kids will welcome Remy’s brother, Emile, who can never completely understand Remy’s interest in interacting with people and cooking food for humans. (This sentiment, however, does not prevent Emile, from enjoying the results of Remy’s culinary skills). The final board book in this collection revolves around Colette, the chef who tries to teach Linguini to cook, only to realize that Remy has already stepped up to the plate to guide him through.
These board books are simple, so much so that it is difficult to pinpoint the beginning, middle and end of each story. However, the vibrant characters and chunky pages more than make up for the loose storylines, which can be explained as a mere preview of the more comprehensive stories children will learn to love as they grow and learn.
