This oversized picture book is the first thing I would recommend to parents looking for books that help preschoolers get ready for their first day of school.
Rosie is a cheerful student. After her dad drops her off at school, she narrates her day. “Come on in,” she says with a big smile and open arms.
In her classroom, each child has a labelled cubby of their own. There is a reading corner, wooden blocks, a toy kitchen, and colorful carpets. During their full day of school, the children’s routine includes circle time, play time, lunch, music class, recess, chores, naptime and art.
Appearing in a circle on every page are “Rosie’s Tips,” which are reminders about how to behave in school (Remember to use soap and water and dry your hands). Rosie has both male and female teachers who come to her multicultural classroom.
The collage and mixed media illustrations show happy, friendly parents and children. At times, Jack appears worried or confused, but Rosie or another classmate try to include him or reassure him when he’s feeling that way.
This would make a good read-aloud during the night before the first day of preschool!
