At last there are superheroes that members of the science club can call our own!
Julian Calendar has inadvertently and irrevocably established himself as a nerd, and he’s not happy about it. After all, there’s an unwritten school rule that prohibits the existence of ‘smart’ and ‘cool’ in the same body. Lucky for Julian, he gets the break we all crave – a chance to start over at a new school where no one knows he’s a genius.
Try as he might, Julian just can’t stop his inner nerd from popping out. It doesn’t take long for Julian to get noticed by the notorious Greta Hughes (“Even the teachers are afraid of her!”) and Ben Garza the super-jock. Just when it looks like Julian’s new life will be even worse than the old one, a mysterious coded message invites him to a super-secret hideout where people just like Julian can be their own brilliant selves.
Not all scientists are good guys, though. One of the evil kind is lurking, ready to spring his nefarious plot on Julian’s new hometown. Are the pre-teen members of the Secret Science Alliance smart enough to stop a criminal mastermind? Count on it!
Eleanor Davis’s full-length graphic novel is a delightful and much-needed addition to the YA genre. Davis is the recipient of the Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor award for her beginning readers book Stinky. The Secret Science Alliance and the Copycat Crook proves that she’s more than a one-book wonder.
An exciting adventure combined with lively, sophisticated artwork makes this a full-bodied read for every age group. Best of all, young readers who look forward to pop quizzes and bonus assignments will learn from the Secret Science Alliance how to appreciate their special brand of awesomeness.
