The Seesaw (The Animal Square)
by Judith Koppens, illustrated by Eline Van Lindenhuizen
Ages 2-5 32 pages Clavis July 2013 Hardcover

Koppens and van Lindenhuizen’s new picture book is about cooperation on the playground. Giraffe wants to play in the park on the seesaw but his friends (Mouse, Dog and Monkey) by themselves are too light to make Giraffe rise up in the air.

There is a lot of repetition in this story (“I think you’re too heavy. Look, I can’t go down!”/”You’re too light. Look, I can’t go up!”) as the animals try to make the seesaw move as it should. However, just as these same friends did in Goodbye, Fish (The Animal Square series), they think of a plan that cheers up their friend.

The sturdy, double-page spreads show alternating views of the animals on the seesaw. Details are few. Toys are scattered on the grass, and the sky is pale yellow. Children who have been on a seesaw with a parent or older sibling will know exactly how Giraffe feels in this situation.
