Shatter Me
by Tahereh Mafi
Ages 14+ 368 pages HarperCollins October 2012 Paperback

Unravel Me
by Tahereh Mafi
Ages 14+ 480 pages HarperCollins February 2013 Hardcover

Mafi's two books--Shatter Me came out several months ago and Unravel Me is due to be published in February 2013--reveal her distinctly idiosyncratic style as she writes about a dystopian society where the Reestablishment have taken over. This terrific storyteller imagines a dark world in our future, but her writing style might put off some people.

For starters, she uses the device of putting a line through words and sentences meant to convey her inner thoughts. She disdains the use of commas and other grammatical marks. Her thoughts sometimes come out stilted, as in, "I hate the lackadaisical ennui of a sun too preoccupied with itself to notice the infinite hours we spend in its presence." A bit flowery, maybe, but she does lend a sense of poetry to these types of descriptions.

It is a stream of consciousness-type writing style that is still in development. If you dig X-Men and Jenny Pox, you'll like these two books.
