Shelby
by Stacy A. Nyikos, illustrated by Shawn N. Sisneros
Ages 4-8 32 pages Stonehorse Publishing June 2006 Hardcover

Shelby, a lonely lemon shark, wants nothing more than to play with the other fish. But she is painfully shy, terrified at just the thought of saying hello. She spends her time watching the others frolic while she hides in the seaweed. Then one day a real monster descends into the depths of their ocean playground. Shelby senses its grave danger and wants to warn her unsuspecting neighbors, but her fear of reaching out to them plunges her into immobility. She watches in misery as a large net drops down and surrounds the smaller fish, trapping them. Can Shelby overcome her terror and save them?

Author Stacy A. Nyikos tells the story of Shelby in a light, whimsical rhyme, accompanied by illustrator Shawn Sisneros' delightful art. As in their first book, Squirt, Shelby's tale will captivate young readers, who will identify with the lemon shark as she overcomes her shyness, conquers her fears, and saves her friends from an untimely end. Similar to Squirt, Shelby has a "Shark Bites" section following the story that lists lemon shark facts in a stimulating question/answer format. An on-line activities and teaching guide available through the publisher makes Shelby the perfect book for any young child.
