Some Things Are Scary
by Florence Parry Heide, illustrated by Jules Feiffer
Ages 3+ 40 pages Candlewick July 2011 Paperback

Some Things Are Scary brings to life some of a child’s biggest fears through large, bold illustrations. Not only does author Florence Parry Heide present scary physical situations like skating downhill and not knowing how to stop or getting an injection; she also addresses intimidating psychological situations such as thinking you’re not going to be picked for a team.

The situations illustrated with the expressive large pen stroke pictures are humorous and evocative. Many of the illustrations also take the full double-page spread of an already large-format book and will thoroughly engage a young audience of 3 years. Children 6 and up, as well as parents, will more likely appreciate the tongue-in-cheek humor of some of the situations (like being with your parents in an art museum).

Though the book ends somewhat abruptly on a frightening final thought, author Florence Parry Heide and illustrator Jule Feiffer have created a book that will make kids cringe, nod their head in recognition, make them think about the things that are scary in life, and hopefully teach them to rethink their fears by seeing the humor in the situation.
