Part of the 60th anniversary celebration of Sparky’s longtime role as the spokesdog and official mascot of the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), Sparky: The Fire Dog features the Dalmatian puppy instructing his animal friends on fire prevention around the home.
Sparky shows these potential junior fire inspectors what kinds of things to be on the lookout for if they are to keep their households safe. Don’t leave candles burning unattended, never barbecue indoor using charcoal, always check the smoke detectors to make sure the batteries are not dead, and keep matches out of the reach of small children are just some of the tips this helpful fire dog shares with his friends.
By the time he or she has finished this book, your little fire inspector will have a pretty good idea of what to watch out for in your home to keep it safe from the threat of fire and related problems like stove accidents.
Given the amount of text in this picture book, it makes a good read-aloud volume but also one that young readers should be able to get through fairly easily. It’s also an ideal book to use in the classroom, and it should certainly be in school libraries for use with any home safety assignments teachers might give their students.
