Grades 2-3 32 pages Seven Footer Press September 2011 Hardcover

The Spirit Glass: A Book of Magically Hidden Images is an aesthetically pleasing book filled with rhymes and clues related to ghosts, cemeteries, and UFOs.

What makes this book stand out from those that cover these same themes is that the text directs readers to hidden pictures which will only be revealed when the reader drags the business card-sized piece of special glass provided with the book directly over the parts of the pages that hide the images. The actual piece of glass has different images along its edges, and rotating the glass pursuant to the directions (such as ensuring that the picture of the sun is at the top of the page as opposed to the moon) will produce different results.

The use of the glass might be a bit difficult to master at first, but clear and detailed directions about its use appear at the beginning of the book, and consistent reminders can be found on most of the other pages. Also, there is a comprehensive answer key at the back of the book, which provides useful guidance for the images that are particularly difficult to pinpoint.

The only criticism I have is that despite the fact there is a small envelope to house the glass decoder on the book’s inside cover, I would imagine it would not take long for it to be lost or misplaced in which case this enhanced appeal of the book would be immediately lost.

Seven Footer Press takes the publication of books to a new level—routinely offering books with some type of twist that provides an enhanced reading experience—and The Spirit Glass: A Book of Magically Hidden Images is perfectly aligned with that theme. Readers will likely alternate between reading the book cover-to-cover and revisiting their favorite pages to uncover the hidden images time and time again. This book would be appropriate for sale throughout the year, but will be a particularly popular “treat” during the Halloween season.
