Splat the Cat Goes to the Doctor
by Rob Scotton
Ages 3-5 24 pages HarperFestival August 2014 Paperback

Splat is excited about leaving school early to go to the doctor’s office until Spike the bully tells him about “ther-mom-o-meters” that take your temperature (“What if you want to keep your temperature?” asks Plank) and doctors who wrap you up in bandages.

Splat grabs onto his desk leg when his mother tries to take him out of his classroom because he envisions himself looking like a mummy. “It’s okay,” says his mom. “Doctors are our friends.”

Dr. Heffen-Feffer, DVM, has a poster in her office (Watch Out! Fleas About!) and a variety of fun toys. After the nurse finds his hiding spot in the toy box, he takes him into the colourful examination room. The doctor’s fish-patterned shirt and friendly demeanor help Splat feel at ease during his exam, which includes recording his height, weight, and temperature and checking his reflexes.

In the end, Splat receives a “I’m Great” sticker for being a good patient. The sticker can be found on a page of 31 stickers that comes with the book (easily removable if buying for a library).

I would buy this book for a doctor’s waiting room or for a library as part of a “first experiences” section. The story copycats what children will likely experience in a routine medical check-up.
