Why are all the squirrels skiing—and with toothpicks and popsicle sticks? Eighty-five squirrels and more on the way! And each of them balanced on two little skis, wearing muffs on their ears and pads on their knees. And all of them holding two tiny poles, which they stuck in the snow making two tiny holes.
They disrupt peace in town by knocking down garbage cans and skiing in and out of traffic. Stanley Powers, the exterminator, wants to use poison and traps on the squirrels, but reporter Sally Sue Breeze’s solution is one that the townspeople can agree on.
With the help from a rascally white rabbit, she lures the squirrels away from town with the smell of roasting acorns. After the squirrels are fed, she shows them where they can ski: she has transformed the old factory (that used to belong to the town) into the Bushy Tail Great Ski Chalet.
Emmy Award winner J. Hamilton Ray is a writer and producer on the TV show Between the Lions. Squirrels on Skis , his first book, has playful rhymes and a solid story. Lemaitre, who also illustrated a Beginner Book by Joan Heilbroner entitled A Pet Snaked Sneaker, adds to the silliness and energy of the story with his athletic, childlike squirrels. A lot of the squirrels’ personality shows through their tails and clothing. Definitely include this book in any Beginner Book collection.
