Somewhere So Sleepy by Diane Muldrow is a gentle bedtime book featuring baby animals drifting off to sleep one by one.
Two facing pages show a nighttime setting with a baby animal - for instance, a baby koala perches on its mother’s back, munching on bamboo leaves as a luminescent crescent moon hangs low in the sky. You lift the flap that covers one of the pages to see the koala sleeping soundly, cuddled up with its mother. The final page features a small child drifting off to sleep in its bed in a room with a lift-up window shade - a nifty touch.
The beautiful illustrations in nature-friendly tones of blue, green and brown by Jui Ishida make this soothing and gorgeous book a standout. The one criticism I have: the flaps are a tad tricky to lift and might prove challenging for a very young child.
