A mother fox puts her baby to bed and soothes his fears of the stormy night raging outside his bedroom.
Then should the oceans roar and rise
and dark clouds race across the skies
I’d hold you tight and close and warm
and keep you safe all through the storm.
Similarly, a rabbit and its baby watch thunder and lightning from the safety of their cozy bed. An owl wraps her owlet safely in her wings and tells her “tales of sleepy things” while a gale whips leaves, twigs and branches around them. A snail and her baby simply sail away from torrential rains in an adorable boat made of leaves and twigs.
The outstanding feature of this book is its gorgeous, colorful, and vibrant artwork. Debi Gliori’s art perfectly captures the feel of being caught in a big storm. The stylized and detailed artwork simply oozes charm and whimsy. The stunning artwork more than makes up for occasional awkwardness in the prose.
Stormy Weather is a solid addition to any preschooler’s library, but a child who is afraid of storms may particularly appreciate the theme of being kept safe in all kinds of trouble.
