*The Tear Thief* by Carol Ann Duffy, illustrated by Nicoletta Cecoli
The Tear Thief
by Carol Ann Duffy, illustrated by Nicoletta Cecoli
Ages 3-7 32 pages Barefoot Books September 2007 Hardcover

What stops our tears? Takes away our sadness? The Tear Thief is the story of a spirit, a ghost-like girl who visits children and takes their tears away.

Most of the tears are inconsequential – tantrums, a fight with a sibling, self-pity. Some tears are more important; tears of genuine sadness. When the tear thief finds a girl whose tears are of real sadness, just one is worth a hundred of the others. This is the child who can see the tear thief and fully realize the value of her tears as they become the most beautiful part of the moon’s light.

This original story is exquisitely illustrated with emotional and ephemeral qualities which evoke a desire to believe in something which we cannot see. As the tear thief visits each child, she brings a sense of comfort when the tears are gone. This delightful bedtime story sparks the imagination, evokes a feeling of wonder, and leads the reader to consider the value of tears in different situations.
