Tell Me the Day Backwards
by Albert Lamb, illustrated by David McPhail
Ages 3-7 40 pages Candlewick March 2011 Hardcover

Timmy Bear is getting ready for bed when asks his mother to play a game with him called “Tell Me the Day Backwards.” They each take turns describing Timmy’s day in reverse, describing the quieter moments (watching the sunset with his parents) and his misadventures (stealing honey from the bees, and then being chased by the bees into the stream).

While very young children may not have a clear enough notion of time and cause-and-effect to understand this backwards story, children between the ages of three and five are sure to appreciate the clever concept behind this charming book. Pen and watercolor illustrations of a friendly bear family and lovely natural settings enhance the appeal of this story.
