Ten Dirty Pigs/Ten Clean Pigs: An Upside-Down, Turn-Around Bathtime Counting Book

Baby-PreK 22 pages NorthSouth September 2008 Board book

Ten Dirty Pigs is a charming board book that is actually two stories in one. The first story is a counting teaching tool which follows ten filthy pigs through their cleaning rituals - one pig gets into the tub, six clean their ears, and eight wash their creases and cracks. The story seems to end with ten clean smiling pigs ready to start their day.

Readers will notice that this cleanliness occurs midway through the book, with instructions to turn the book upside down to see the cleanest pigs in town. The back cover is actually the front cover of a second book called Ten Clean Pigs. This story, too, is a learn-to-count tool which completes the cleansing process begun in the previous story. One clean pig gets out of the tub, five clean pigs powder their noses, eight clean pigs primp and pose and all nine of them head outside.

The irony is that as soon as they leave their home and play in the mud, they are no longer ten clean pigs, but ten dirty ones. Readers will again see that the filth occurs midway through the book - and again, there are instructions to turn the book upside-down to see the dirtiest pigs in town and start the process all over again.

Ten Dirty Pigs is a clever board book that will delight children as they see the pigs get dirty, get cleaned up, and get dirty again and again.
