Counting with Wayne Thiebaud

Baby-preschool 26 pages Chronicle May 2007 Board book

Since children can learn to count by using an infinite number of objects, they might as well use items that they enjoy. This is precisely what the board book Counting with Wayne Thiebaud does so well, using a wide range of treats as its subject.

There are one piece of pie, two ice cream clowns, three sandwich slices, four cupcakes, five sugar sticks, seven hot dogs, eight crackers, nine party cakes and ten cheese wedges. This sequence is followed by a gumball machine filled with gumballs waiting to be counted and devoured.

The book’s chunky pages and clear method of teaching make this book a sweet one, and the fact that each illustration is a masterpiece created by contemporary artist Wayne Thiebaud represents the delicious cherry on top.
