Little kids can be fussy, and the boy in Too Pickley! is no exception. As the child loudly pronounces, “I am hungry,” numerous foods are placed on his plate. However, none seem to please this picky preschooler’s palate. Raisins are “too wrinkly,” a tomato is “too squishy,” and a fruit bowl is - yes, you guessed it - “too fruity.” Will this youngster ever find a satisfying snack?
In the tradition of Jean Reidy’s well-received fashion disaster book, Too Purpley!, another hard-to-please character is born. Told in sparse rhyme, this bright and colorful picture book will resonate with anyone who has ever wrinkled their nose at dinnertime. Cute as it may be, though, the brusque ending comes “too suddenly” and doesn’t give a satisfactory resolution.
Genevieve Leloup’s cartoon-like illustrations lend to the rowdy and boisterous feel. Her simple depiction of a freckle-faced tot and his hamster sidekick fit the bill perfectly and make for a fun and enjoyable read whether you’re a fan of pickles or not.
