Tough, Toothy Baby Sharks by Sandra Markle opens with
three full black semi-gloss pages before delving into the life cycle of a variety of sharks. The 32-page book is filled with at least 19 colorful underwater photos of sharks in their environments, and one image of a cross-section of a shark’s reproductive system.
The book is published in hardcover, and the publisher (Walker & Company) states that they use no synthetic materials and their books are 100% recyclable. Environmentalists will be glad to know that the paper used by this publisher is obtained from well-managed forests according to environmental regulations. I was also pleased to see the author discussing pollution and how the individual can help sharks survive it.
The closing section of the book lists acknowledgements and photo credits. The author also included a glossary and brief information on interesting facts about sharks. Home and public school teachers of children between
the ages of 5 and 8 will be happy to find an interesting map showing where several types of sharks are commonly found.
Author Sandra Markle taught elementary school children for many years and is the author of many award-winning children’s books. She has also played a part in developing science television specials for CNN and PBS, among others. She was inspired to write Tough, Toothy Baby Sharks after an accidental shark experience she had while snorkeling. Watching the sharks far below and away from the humans
while they pursued their fish dinner left a lasting mark on
her, and Tough, Toothy Baby Sharks effectively shares this passion for living things with children.
