This alphabet book is anything but the normal ABC kindergarten primer. The front and back end flaps display the flags used in the international maritime code, and each page gives facts and pictures for the reader to explore and delight in. From the letter A (for anchor and aground) to the letter Z (for zodiac), this book presents nautical information in a way that will entice young readers but also hold the interest of older elementary readers and perhaps middle-school readers.
The background of each page is done in a style that indicates old wood and old paint. One must look carefully to realize that this is not real stained wood, or painted wood. Information included in the text extends from the familiar terms of life preserver and outboard motor to historical terms like Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, and newer terms like regatta and hardtack.
The author has taken this simple approach and given it new life for a new age of readership. The pictures of steamships, sailboats and paddle-wheelers will delight all ages. The diagram of a sailing vessel with its parts all labeled that is included in the last pages is very well done and adds a level of research to this text. Other titles in this series include A is for Astronaut and C is for Caboose.
