The Turning is a ghost tale that is revealed through a series of letters. It reads in similar fashion to the series of letters Jonathan Harker received from Dracula in Bram Stoker's classic vampire novel. However, at its heart, The Turning is a revisiting of Henry Jamess' The Turn of the Screw in which the main character, Jack, descends deeper and deeper into madness.
Jackson Branch is the first-person narrator, a high school student earning an unbelievable two hundred dollars a week to spend the summer watching ten-year-old Miles and his eight-year-old sister, Flora. Even with the promise of all that cash in his pocket, Branch is hesitant to take the gig because it will mean time away from his girlfriend, Sophie.
Aimed at the young teen reader, this may not hold the appeal of vampire stories or demons of one shade or another--but the level of suspense here will raise the hairs on the back of your neck.
