Originally published in 1954, this 2014 edition features digitally restored illustrations. The fairy tale begins with the king promising his throne and one of his daughters to the person who can tell him where his twelve daughters dance at night.
While many give their life to try and find an answer, only one succeeds. He is an older soldier who befriends an old woman in the woods. With her advice and magic cloak, he is able to trick the princesses and find out their secret dance location. When he brings back jeweled evidence for the king, he chooses a princess to marry.
On the last page, they appear to be dancing, but whether they are happy or not, it’s hard to say. We do find out the princes from the underground castle were not up to celebrating the marriage of one of their twelve dance partners.
Children who like stories about princesses and quests will enjoy this classic Little Golden Book.
