Since Eric Carle’s classic books about animals (and about a very hungry caterpillar, in particular) are staples in the libraries of most children, it makes sense that his characters have a new home on a sweet and charming growth chart. The paper growth chart (measuring six feet tall!) is sturdy enough to be transported to different rooms (and even different homes) as children grow. The fact that it is so tall will enable children to compare their growth with that of their parents, whose names and height can be entered at the chart’s base.
The illustrations include characters from many of Carle’s literary successes, and growth milestones are linked to different animals, such as a peacock that can measure up to 3 feet and grow up to 800 feathers, an average hippo that stands at 4 feet tall, and the average kangaroo, which measures in at 6 feet. The bottom of the chart lists the smallest animals (such as a 2-inch hummingbird and a protozoan that measures from 1/5000th to 1/50th of an inch) and the tallest (such as a 13-foot African elephant to a 19-foot giraffe with an 18-inch tongue). The included animal stickers to decorate the chart along with the arrows to mark a child’s height add to the chart’s overall appeal.
Up, Up I Go is a wonderful device that children can use to track their physical growth, and the familiar characters that reinforce reading and Carle’s classic books will likely take care of growing their minds.
