One of the most well-known post-Impressionist artists,
Vincent Van Gogh filled his paintings with the brightest
shades of yellow, blue and green. The artist wrote to his
brother, Theo, describing the work he was doing in vivid
detail and it is these words that are used from page to
page, each revealing another of sixteen of Van Gogh's
brilliant and energetic work.
With a particular appeal for children, Van Gogh's simple but
striking paintings offer a welcome introduction into the
world of art, each painting reproduced with fine detail and
the assured brushstrokes Van Gogh used on his canvases. The
book begins with the author’s self-portrait and the facts of
his birthplace and eventual move to France, where he was
inspired by nature’s bounty, rich color and simplicity.
One of the most recognizable paintings is Sunflowers,
“Twelve flowers that are light on light”; Irises, “a big
bunch of violet irises”; The Bedroom, “two chairs the yellow
of fresh butter”; and The Starry Night, “and in my head a
starry night,” all of them spilling from page to page, in
unfolding poetry.
Beautifully bound, this volume of paintings and poetry has
universal appeal, Van Gogh the perfect artist to teach a
child the language of color and creativity. By Chronicle
Books, Vincent's Colors is a wonderful addition
to a child’s library of beloved artists.
